Do you know about Monsoon season?
Monsoon season is a relief to dry conditions in many areas of the world. Monsoon, or rainy seasons, are a shift in wind direction which causes excessive rainfall in many parts of the world.During most of the year, winds blow from land to ocean making the air dry. Winds originating from land are called continetal . During certain months of the year, the winds begin to blow from the ocean to the land making the air moist. Winds originating over a body of water are called maritimeThis moist ocean air is what causes monsoonal rains over many countries.
In Kerala there are two types of monsoons...................
1. South West monsoon
2. North East monsoon
1. South West monsoon
Southwest monsoon is the main rainy season of Kerala.This season ( Edavappathi - as the rains starts by the middle of the Malayalam month Edavam ) begins by the end of May or early June with the outset of the southwest monsoon winds. Almost 85% of the rain is contributed by the monsoons. The slopes of the Western Ghats are among the places in India which receives the highest amount of rain. Most of the rivers of Kerala are fed by the monsoons. The southwest monsoons lasts till the end of September.
2. North East monsoon
These rains ( Thulavarsham - as it rains during the Malayalam month of Thulam) are in the months of October and November and sometimes lasts till December. Heavy afternoon rains accompanied by thunder and lightening is the main characteristic of the season. Days are warm and humid but there is not much variation in temperature.
